May increase melatonin levels, thus improving the quantity and quality of sleep
Tryptophan is one of the eight essential amino acids. It participates in protein synthesis and has a significant impact on the proper functioning of the body. In the central nervous system, tryptophan is converted into melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is a hormone responsible for the circadian rhythm of the body, while serotonin is the so-called happiness hormone—a neurotransmitter responsible for certain emotional states such as aggression, sleep, mood, and sexual behavior. In addition to synthesizing proteins and enzymes, tryptophan also takes part in the biosynthesis of vitamin PP. It affects the functioning of the nervous system by regulating the levels of neurotransmitters: noradrenaline, dopamine, and β-endorphin. A lack of adequate tryptophan in the body leads to reduced melatonin and serotonin activity, which can result in health issues, particularly emotional and depressive disorders. Daily intake of a supplement containing a low dose of bioavailable tryptophan may have a beneficial effect on emotional well-being and sleep quality in perimenopausal women.*
